Culinary Arts Program for Teens

In the summer of 2017, thanks to Mayor’s Summer Youth Program Initiative, the Cardinal Shehan Center launched its Culinary, Hospitality & Entrepreneurship Program servicing 25 teens, ages 14-19 years old. Teens are taught meal preparation, how to cook, kitchen safety, and etiquette. In 2018, the program served 27 teens who now feel confident cooking in the kitchen.

Teens have prepared learned how to prepare a variety of meals ranging from Italian to Asian. The Program includes, hands on cooking, guest speakers, field trips, and participants have prepared meals for the homeless and the vets.

Participants who complete the Program are provided with a stipend and certificate. They will also have the opportunity to enroll in our Job Training Program which will provide the necessary skills as they enter the workforce.

Cooking Program for K through Preteens

During the After School Program and during Summer Camp, children are introduced to the basics of cooking. They learn about the different types of seasonings- including herbs, they utilize math skills in measurements, learn how to cook a variety of meals, and are introduced to baking.

Crops from the center’s garden planted by the students along with volunteers are utilized in the cooking program. It is our hope that pre-teens would then participate in the Culinary Arts, Hospitality & Entrepreneurship Program and once completed enter the Job Training Program.

Shehan Center is exempt from licensure as a day care center pursuant to Conn. Public Act 11-193
